The exhibition of works by Halyna Nazarenko opens a window into the world of Petrykivka painting, a distinctive Ukrainian art tradition that emerged in the village of Petrykivka, Ukraine. Bringing together works created across different periods and exploring a range of themes. The exhibition presents traditional flowers compositions, fantastical birds, the iconic figure of Cossack Mamai, painted icons, and maliovky — a world rich in symbols, beauty, and a profound Celebration of life.
Today, Petrykivka village lies only 80 kilometers from the front line of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Despite the ongoing war, artists continue to create, carrying forward from generation to generation an artistic tradition inseparably connected to this place and its cultural memory.
Halyna Nazarenko’s exhibition at the Ukrainian National Museum in Chicago invites audiences to encounter Petrykivka not simply as a decorative representation of Ukraine, but as a living cultural tradition shaped by history, preserved across generations, and carried forward by a contemporary master.
